ESSENTIAL OIL PROTOCOL
WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
By Dr. Axe
Have you ever smelled the crisp, refreshing scent of a fresh cut lemon?
Or maybe you’ve breathed in the cool, tingling air of real peppermint?
If so, you may have already experienced the power of essential oils and not even know it.
Essential oils are responsible for the fragrances you smell. They’re also the nutritional compounds inside many plants and herbs. And once extracted from the plant or herb, they bring many of the same health-giving benefits to the table. One reason they’re so powerful is because they’re the “essence” of the real plant or herb, only in a highly concentrated form.
ESSENTIAL OIL APPLICATIONS
4 most common ways these healing oils are used today:
Topically – Scientific studies have proven that essential oils are able to penetrate the skin, pass into the bloodstream and into various areas of the body for internal therapeutic benefits.
Aromatically - There is also great evidence that essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream when inhaled. The large amount of blood vessels in the lungs absorb the oils and then circulate them throughout the body.
Using a diffuser can help you experience the benefits of essential oils.
Ingestion – Essential oils can be used as a powerful form of medicine but it should be remembered that again, essential oils are powerful. Most essential oils are safe for internal use but a little bit goes a long way. Usually 1-3 drops is plenty mixed with water.
Oils like peppermint, lemon and frankincense have great internal benefits and can be taken with water. Other essential oils like clove and oregano need to be diluted and shouldn’t be taken internally for more than 1 week.
Personal Care – Today, the fastest way essential oils are being used is by making homemade DIY personal care products. This is a simple, cost effective way to use essential oils as opposed to beauty and other chemical-laden lotions and creams to improve your beauty, home and long term health.
OPTIMAL MIND BODY ESSENTIAL OIL PROTOCOLS
With each protocol I recommend that once you apply/diffuse, you close your eyes and take three, 6-count nasal breaths in order to:

Purify fridge: To freshen up the fridge or freezer when cleaning, add a few drops of lime, grapefruit or bergamot oil to the rinsing water.

Eliminate smoke: To remove cigarette smoke, put four drops of rosemary, tea tree and eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle and spray around the house.
Detoxify the air: Add peppermint and eucalyptus oil to a gallon of paint to dispel fumes.
Get rid of shoe smell: To remove the smell from shoes, add a few drops of tea tree oil and lemon oil to freshen them up.

Baby shower gift: Give a wall diffuser with a lavender scent to calm the mom and baby.
Flavored lemon water: Use 2-3 drops of lemon oil in water for a delicious citrus flavor.
Cleaner dishes: Add a few drops of lemon oil to the dishwasher before washing for a spot-free rinse.
Shoe Deodorizer:
Measure out 2 tablespoons of baking soda, pour it into a small bowl you can mix your ingredients in. Baking soda is an awesome odor absorber, as you might know from using it in your fridge or somewhere else smelly. The baking soda is what does all the hard work in this homemade shoe deodorizer. It will pull whatever nasty odors might be hiding inside of your shoes.
Pick out your favorite essential oils and sprinkle about five drops of it into the baking soda. You can skip this part if you want, it isn’t essential, it only helps make your shoes smell great.
For mine, I’m using pine essential oil because I love the smell of trees! Other good essential oil options for your homemade shoe deodorizers are lavender or a citrus scent. If you don’t have any, an essential oil starter set will give you a good selection of oils to experiment with.
Now that you’ve got all you ingredients together, give them a good stir.
Do your best to break up the essential oil as it has a tendency to clump.
Sprinklin’ time, I like to pour about a tablespoon of the shoe deodorizer into the heel of each shoe. Then tilt the toe of the shoe slowly downward to work the powder evenly and completely across the entire footbed (where your foot rests on the inside of the shoe).
A couple of tips:
Makeover your medicine cabinet and create a family physician kit with essential oils of lavender, lemon, peppermint, tea tree, oregano and frankincense.

THE 4 BEST ANTI-AGING ESSENTIAL OILS BY DR. AXE
1. Jojoba Oil
You may not have heard of this jojoba oil before, but it is probably one of the most hydrating oils in the entire world and it does so in a surprisingly non-oily fashion. Jojoba oil contains many beneficial ingredients, including vitamin E, vitamin B complex, silicon, chromium, copper and zinc. It also can address the average person’s lack of iodine-rich foods, as it has a very high percentage of iodine at 82 percent — in part, iodine gives jojoba oil its power to heal.
Our sebaceous glands are microscopic glands in our skin that secrete an oily or waxy matter called sebum. The texture and use of sebum is very similar to jojoba oil, so as we age our sebaceous glands produce less sebum, which is why we get dry skin and hair — it can even lead to dandruff or itchy scalp.
A jojoba oil benefit is that it plays the role of sebum and moisturizes our skin and hair when our body stops doing it naturally. On the other hand, too much sebum, which happens when hormone levels are high, can result in oily skin and acne. Jojoba oil removes sticky buildup or excess oil, too; it keeps your oil levels balanced. That makes it a strong natural treatment for eczema as well as home remedy for acne, plus well suited for other dry-skin conditions.
As an emollient, jojoba oil moisturizes our skin and prevents irritations, or scaly and rough patches. Dry skin is caused by a loss of water in the upper layer of the skin. Jojoba oil works by forming an oily layer on the top of the skin that traps water in the skin. It works on your face, neck, hands, feet and hair; you can use it anywhere on your body because it’s completely natural and contains no chemicals that lead to an allergic reaction.
Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn’t clog pores. Jojoba oil is rich in iodine, which fights harmful bacteria growth that leads to breakouts. The antioxidants present in jojoba oil soothe fine lines, wrinkles and naturally slow down other signs of aging.
Jojoba oil can also accelerate the wound-healing process, as indicated in a study done at the Department of Environment and Life Sciences in Italy. The results proved that jojoba oil speeds up wound closures and stimulates collagen synthesis; the study also noted that jojoba oil had extremely low toxic effects when used on the skin.
A 2012 study conducted in Germany examined jojoba oil’s ability to reduce skin lesions and improve overall skin condition for 194 participants, who applied clay masks with jojoba oil to their faces two to three times per week; 54 percent of the participants reported that skin lesions were reduced significantly after six weeks of using jojoba oil.
2. Pomegranate Seed Oil
Next, hunt for pomegranate seed oil — part of a potent natural treatments for skin cancer. Pomegranate seed oil is my favorite ingredient for the serum recipe below, as pomegranate has been used throughout history for its many benefits, and it’s considered one of the Bible foods that heals.
In particular, pomegranates are associated with anti-aging, and the most powerful form of pomegranate for anti-aging is its oil. You will notice there’s a dark red color with pomegranate oil, which are called bioflavonoids. That dark color also protects your skin from sun damage. If you ever go outside and get a sunburn, put pomegranate seed oil on your skin — it has a natural SPF and can actually be used as a natural sunblock and sunscreen.
3. Frankincense Oil
What is frankincense good for? It can actually reduce the appearance of sunspots and age spots. If you have uneven color on your skin, some whiteness in some areas, any spottiness or splotchiness, frankincense oil is the number one ingredient that can help even out skin tone and help get rid of sunspots and age spots.
Frankincense essential oil is a powerful astringent, meaning it helps protect skin cells. It can be used to help reduce acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores and wrinkles. The oil can be used anywhere where the skin becomes saggy such as the abdomen, jowls, or under the eyes. Mix six drops of oil to one ounce of an unscented oil like jojoba oil and apply it directly to the skin. Be sure to always do a small patch area though first to test for possible allergic reactions.
Frankincense has the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity, defense mechanisms against bacteria or blemishes, and appearance as someone ages. Studies have shown that it helps tone and lift skin, reduces appearance of scars and acne, and heals wounds. It can also be beneficial for fading of stretch marks, surgery scars or marks associated with pregnancy, and for healing dry or cracked skin.
4. Lavender Oil
The best essential oil to use is lavender essential oil. It’s probably the No. 1 oil that helps heal skin conditions, burns and cuts — but also because it specifically targets your skin, gets it in a healing state and improves cellular communication within your skin.
Arguably the most dangerous and most common risk factor for every disease that affects Americans, free radicals (toxins, chemicals, pollutants, etc.) are responsible for shutting down your immune system and can cause unbelievable damage to your body, including your skin.
You need antioxidants to successfully fight free radical damage, and according to research, lavender essential oil helps your body produce three of your body’s most powerful antioxidants, glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase.
Most likely due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant characteristics, lavender essential mixed with benefit-rich aloe vera or coconut oil has profound benefits on your skin. Just 10 drops per one ounce of aloe vera or oil will sooth the worst sunburn and bring rapid healing to dry skin, minor cuts and scraps.
Want to reduce age spots? Try mixing lavender oil with frankincense essential oil and put it on your skin first thing in the morning, right after you shower and right before bed.
YOUR NEW ANTI-AGING SERUM
Anti-aging essential oils are the major part of a homemade anti-aging serum that richly hydrates your skin as well as provides antioxidant protection. In addition, it’ll give you certain phytonutrients that improve cellular communication and skin healing.
First, get a small glass vial in a dropper form so you can put a few drops on your fingertips and then rub it in.
The first ingredient to use is jojoba oil, which is easy to find online or in a health food store.
The second ingredient is vitamin E. Vitamin E benefits include fat-soluble antioxidants that supply nutrients for your skin to help you age slower.
Next, hunt for pomegranate seed oil or some other antioxidant seed oil, even like raspberry seed oil. Then also obtain frankincense and lavender essential oils.
Next, take all of these oils — jojoba, vitamin E, pomegranate oil, frankincense oil and lavender oil — and simply mix them all together. You put 1/4 ounce of all essential oils into the little serum jar and every night before you go to bed, take about four or five drops and rub them into your skin, especially all over your face. You can also do it once in the morning as well.
This anti-aging serum is going to help your skin look younger than it’s ever been. It’s going to hydrate and protect your skin. You can actually start to reverse the aging process in your skin and look younger. Frankly, I’ve had some people who’ve done this serum or used similar products and said they started looking younger within just a few days.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL OILS & SKINCARE
Jojobo Oil:
Jojoba oil was my first love. When I first started using it, all day I would look forward to bedtime so I could apply it again, knowing that I’d wake up the next morning with clearer skin (it’s a little sad but very true, and if you’ve ever been desperate for clear skin then you feel me).
Jojoba oil is a light oil that is easily absorbed. It mimics the skin’s sebum, tricking it to produce less oil. While it does not feel that your skin has oil on it, I do not like wearing it alone during the day since it does give my face a slight sheen. That being said, I do mix it with the following dry oil and apply during the day…
Rosehip oil
Rosehip oil is my newest obsession. I confess that I decided to try rosehip oil after learning that Rose Byrne — a.k.a. hilariously awful and beautiful Helen fromBidesmaid — Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Miranda Kerr all use this oil. You have to admit, these ladies have some lovely skin.
Rosehip oil is a dry oil that penetrates to the deepest layers of the skin where it regenerates cells, increasing collagen production. It is rich in vitamin C, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, all of which are known to help heal scar tissue. It is also high in retinoic acid, which studies show reduces the appearance of wrinkles and brightens skin.
Rosehip oil is without a doubt an integral part of my skincare routine, but do find it too drying to wear alone. Also, from my research it seems as though there can be a large discrepancy in the quality of certain rosehip oils, and the prices do certainly range quite a bit. It seems that it is worth spending more on a higher quality oil, such as the one I have been linking to here. This brand is the specific oil I have and have been using and with great results.
Castor oil
I tried using castor oil long before this face-oil-love-fest you’re witnessing right now, but didn’t stick with it. It is a very thick oil, and I didn’t like the fact that it felt like I had… well, oil on my face. That and it actually dried my skin out. This is because I was doing it all wrong; I was using just the castor oil. Less is definitely more when it comes to this oil: when a small amount of castor oil is mixed with another, thinner oil (such a jojoba — clearly my go-to!) the result is wonderful.
Castor oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, making it ideal for breakout-prone skin. It is high in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, proteins, and minerals. In addition to helping reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammation associated with breakouts, it can help heal discoloration and scars from acne.
Hemp seed oil
Hemp seed oil has a 0 comedogenic rating meaning it does not clog pores. I’ll say that again: this oil does not clog pores. The other oils on this list have a comedogenic rating of 1-2 out of 5, meaning that they may clog pores (but they won’t necessarily clog pores — it really depends on the person, and 1-2 is a low rating).
Hemp seed oil helps to reduce the size of pores by helping to eliminate blackheads and acne. It also protects the skin from free radicals and improves elasticity. Because of its anti-inflammatory qualities, it is often recommended for the treatment of psoriasis and eczema. It is made up of 80% essential fatty acids (EFAs) and is said to contain the ideal ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 EFAs, which allows it to penetrate the layers of the skin.
Hemp seed oil is a very dry oil, and works best for me when mixed with a thick oil like castor oil or jojoba oil. The only thing I dislike about hemp seed oil is that it needs to be refrigerated after opening. And while I have a habit of applying masks in my kitchen in the reflection of the microwave that I very rarely use after steaming my pores open above a pot of water on the stove… there’s something about having to put your moisturizer on in the kitchen that makes me groan. That, and the fact that it’s cold when you apply it.
Tamanu oil
Like rosehip oil, tamanu oil helps regenerate skin tissue. For this reason, it is helps heal broken skin, and repair sun and acne damaged skin. It also has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties, making it ideal for acne sufferers. The thing that setstamanu oilapart from the rest is a certain lipid called calophyllolide, which is not found in other oils and is a very strong anti-inflammatory.
THE TOP 10 ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKINCARE
Carrot seed essential oil
Carrot seed essential oil has a rejuvenating effect on the skin. It not only works to help smooth skin, but assists with cell regeneration. For this reason, it can help to fade scars and improve the tone of aging skin.
Frankincense Essential Oil
Frankincense essential oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits to the skin, making it ideal for acne-prone skin. It is also a natural toner, decreasing the appearance of pores and evening skin-tone. It is cytophylactic, which means that it helps protect existing cells and encourage new cell growth. For this reason, it helps reduce wrinkles, tighten skin, and reduce the appearance of scars. It also helps soothe chapped, dry skin.
Geranium Essential Oil
Geranium essential oil helps regulate oil production and reduces acne breakouts. It also helps improve skin elasticity and tighten skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also promotes blood circulation to the areas where it is applied, helping to heal bruises, broken capillaries, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, ringworm, and other skin conditions. This baby does it all!
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender essential oil is one I suggest no one goes without — it smells amazing, helps you relax and your body adapt to stress, and has great benefits for the skin. It helps regenerate skin cells so is great for mature skin, sun spots, and scarring. Another great oil for all skin types and needs.
Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon essential oil is a wonderful natural astringent and antibacterial. As such, it is extremely beneficial to those with oily and acne-prone complexions. It also helps tone the skin and reduce the appearance of pores.
Myrrh Essential Oil
Myrrh essential oil greatly benefits aging skin. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties that help improve skin tone, firmness, and skin elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Myrrh can also help heal sun damage, chapped skin, rashes, and eczema.
Neroli Essential Oil
Neroli essential oil is great for oily, sensitive, and mature skin. It helps to smooth fine lines and tone sagging skin. This rejuvenating oil contains a natural chemical called citral, which helps regenerate cells. For this reason, it is said to be very good at preventing and healing stretch marks, as well. Its antiseptic properties also balance oil production and shrink the appearance of pores without drying skin.
Patchouli Essential Oil
Patchouli essential oil is particularly great for aging skin. It promotes new cell growth and smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because it also has antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, it can also benefit skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and acne.
Rose Essential Oil
Rose essential oil is especially great for dry or aging skin. Researchers have found that it contains several therapeutic compounds known to promote healing, especially antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds. As a result, rose essential oil helps refine skin texture and tone, and can be helpful with managing skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis. Interestingly, one study even found that inhaling rose essential oil inhibits water loss in the skin and lowers the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in the body (stress has a profound impact on your skin!).
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil is one of the more well-known essential oils for acne-prone skin. Its antibacterial properties help ward off acne-causing bacteria. It also helps to regulate oil production, which can decrease the severity and incidence of breakouts.
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
Ylang ylang essential oil is one of my favorite essential oils because of its rich, floral fragrance. It is helps to control oil production and minimize breakouts. It also helps regenerate skin cells, smoothing fine lines and improving skin elasticity. Another great essential oil for every skin type.
Some important essential oil guidelines to remember:Essential oils should be diluted in a carrier oil to a maximum of 5% (see these 5 face oils for naturally clear, flawless skin). So since 1 ml is 20 drops, for every 1 ml of carrier oil, you would add 1 drop of EO. Be sure to do a patch test to make sure your skin does not have an adverse reaction to the oils. The inner forearm is a great place to do a test since the skin is delicate, similar to facial skin.
Additionally, certain essential oils should be avoided by pregnant women, infants, and young children, so be sure to do your homework beforehand.
How else to use these essential oils in your skincare routine?Essential oils play a big role in many natural skincare DIYs. Some of my personal favorites that I use regularly:

- Don’t skimp on the shoe deodorizer, if you don’t add enough in you’ll probably end leaving some smelliness behind.
- Also, don’t work the powder in, you don’t need to rub it into the shoe. That will only result in more powder being left behind in the shoe when you shake it out. Your results should be just fine if you simply dust the surface of the footbed.
Makeover your medicine cabinet and create a family physician kit with essential oils of lavender, lemon, peppermint, tea tree, oregano and frankincense.
CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING ESSENTIAL OILS
- Quality of your EO’s is critical. There are four grades. You want the top grade of course because you’re using them for medicinal purposes by applying them to your skin and ingesting them. They must have these four features:
1) Certified Organic
2) 100% Pure and Therapeutic Grade. There are many oils that are therapeutic grade but not organic so be sure it says “certified organic”.
3) Sourced indigenously or from certified organic land
4) Does not contain any bases, fillers or additives
- Sustainability: In keeping with our mindful living, we strive to choose (as often as possible) mindful brands whose products and practices not only cause the least amount of damage to our environment, but also who give back to the environment-literally and figuratively. Whenever possible, choose those brands that practice sustainable farming, harvesting and manufacturing methods.
- After researching countless brands and trying hundreds of essential oils over the years, I’ve chosen to use and recommend only Young Living Essential Oils because their products, practices and vibe (business and otherwise) maintain the highest possible integrity.

Frankincense Essential Oil
Frankincense essential oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits to the skin, making it ideal for acne-prone skin.

- DIY all-natural face oil for acne-prone & oily skin
- DIY all-natural clarifying & toning foaming facewash
- DIY all-natural clarifying face exfoliant
